If you’re looking for things to do in Rome with children, September is the perfect time to enjoy a special day out at Explora, Rome’s Children’s Museum.
A place where play, discovery and learning come together in an engaging experience to share with family or friends.
Throughout the month, there are workshops, activities and events designed to stimulate curiosity, creativity and collaboration through play.
Each activity invites children to explore topics such as science, the environment, civic education, art and new technologies in an active and fun way.
The visit to the Explora museum
From Tuesday to Sunday, Explora opens the doors to its 2,000 square metres of interactive exhibits, where every space offers an opportunity to experiment, observe and learn together.
On the ground floor, you can do your shopping in the Supermarket, tend the Vegetable Garden, discover how the human body works and test your strength against the wind in the Wind Zone. There are also challenges dedicated to the Circular Economy, an exploration of oral hygiene with the Open Mouth exhibit – dedicated to smiling, the body and good habits – and the fountain, featuring numerous experiments dedicated to water and its properties.
On the first floor, the journey continues with PARI, dedicated to the theme of equal opportunities, and Economiamo, where concepts such as earning, saving, donating and investing become practical and surprising activities.
The Piccole Esplorazioni area is dedicated to little ones aged 0 to 36 months, designed to guide them through their first experiences of play and discovery.
At Explora, every exhibit is designed to respect the pace, interests and curiosity of every child, transforming the visit into an interactive experience that also involves adults.

Opening times, services and how to get to Explora
In September, Explora is open from Tuesday to Sunday with visiting sessions at 10.00, 12.00, 15.00 and 17.00.
Each session lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes and, for those who wish to extend their visit, it is possible to purchase a second session at a reduced rate.
If you’d like to return several times throughout the year, you can opt for the Membership – Friends’ Card, designed to let you enjoy the museum all year round and take part in the numerous activities on offer.
The visit continues outdoors too: Explora has a playground in the green area and a car park with discounted rates for museum visitors.
Located just a short walk from Piazza del Popolo, Explora is easily accessible via metro line A (Flaminio station) and numerous bus routes, making it an ideal destination for those looking for things to do in Rome with children or wishing to spend a different kind of day out together.
The events
There are also workshops, events and special activities planned for September, aimed at boys, girls and families.
The activities scheduled for the weekends of 12–13, 19–20 and 26–27 September include:
- Build your own rocket, ages 6 and over
- Ready to launch, ages 3 to 5
Both activities have been organised to celebrate the opening of Lunar Lab, the new exhibition curated by Exploraand the Italian Space Agency, dedicated to lunar exploration and the Artemis programme, which will take children on an immersive journey combining science, engineering and STEM, whilst exploring the opportunities offered by contemporary space exploration.
