The event

Saturday, November 15, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., free admission to the bookshop for an animated reading of Voglio andare senza rotelle (I Want to Ride Without Training Wheels), the book by Tobias Giacomazzi published by Kalandraka.

The event is part of the program of Avventure tra le Pagine, a major event held in Italian museums and cultural spaces, which will come alive on November 14, 15, and 16, 2025, with many creative readings and activities on the theme of literature dedicated to families with children and young people up to 12 years of age. A special moment for children dedicated to the story of Ettore, the frog with a very complicated first experience on a bike without training wheels. What appears to be a dramatic moment, however, turns into an opportunity for growth, thanks in part to the intervention of friendly friends who, through solidarity and empathy, restore Ettore’s smile.

From the book…

The frog, who looks at us with a pout from the front page of the finalist work of the 17th Compostela International Prize for Illustrated Books, is adamant when he says he wants to do without training wheels on his bike. Ettore wants to ride around carefree like the adults in the neighborhood, who are able to pedal while holding the newspaper under their arms, carrying bags, delivering mail, or even performing stunts on a unicycle.

However, his first experience without training wheels ends in tears and frustration, and it is at that moment that those he wanted to imitate come to his aid. “I want to ride without training wheels!” is the story of many boys and girls who, like the tender and lively protagonist of this tale, dream of growing up quickly and doing grown-up things.

The stumbling block of his expectations will teach him the value of empathy and solidarity, perseverance and resilience. Tobias Giacomazzi stages his story by representing the characters in the form of anthropomorphic animals.

The simplicity of the text, which plays with the repetition of the phrase that gives the book its title, is complemented by double-page illustrations in which portraits and elements of urban scenery interact. Everything unfolds in detail, with numerous touches of humor: the stork walking along reading the newspaper with its beak, the letters carried by the wind getting stuck in the hedgehog’s quills, the mouse hiding from the cat stuck in a trap…
