The event
Rome Future Week is coming to Explora, Rome’s Children’s Museum, with a programme dedicated to girls, boys, schools and families, centred on discovery, technology and the exploration of space.
For Rome Future Week, the museum’s outdoor area will be transformed into a space for exploration and play, thanks to free activities organised in collaboration with the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) and the European Space Agency (ESA). An opportunity to learn about space research through interactive and accessible experiences, designed to engage visitors of all ages.
Among the activities is Spazio al quiz, an experience devised as part of the IRIDE project. Scheduled for Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm, and Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September from 11.00 am to 7.00 pm, Spazio al quiz is a fun Earth observation challenge, designed for children, led by staff from Space 42. IRIDE is one of Europe’s most significant space programmes in the field of Earth observation. It is being implemented in Italy as part of the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), supplemented by the National Complementary Plan, and is owned by the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The programme is being developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) with the support of ASI.
It will also be an opportunity to learn about the COSMO-SkyMed Earth Observation programme run by the Italian Space Agency and the Ministry of Defence, comprising a constellation of satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capable of seeing through clouds and in the absence of sunlight, and Copernicus, the European Earth Observation programme managed by the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with the European Commission. Copernicus comprises a fleet of satellites known as Sentinels, which utilise various sensors to help us better understand our planet.
Planets
Furthermore, as part of Rome Future Week, on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm, the Explora garden will host a special augmented reality experience, ‘Planets’. This interactive trail invites children to search for ‘hidden’ planets within the museum’s green space, turning observation into an adventure.
Thanks to software developed by Explora, visitors will be able to view 3D models of the planets directly on their smartphones, without needing to download any apps, and learn more about the fascinating facts and characteristics of these celestial bodies.
The 2026 edition of Rome Future Week at Explora is entirely dedicated to Space and its key players, confirming the value of the collaboration between ASI and Explora even beyond the museum’s exhibition spaces.
A mission that continues through shared experiences such as Lunar Lab, the permanent exhibition dedicated to lunar exploration and the latest developments in scientific research.
