The event
Once again, Explora is taking part in the Rome Science Festival – Chaos and Harmony, with science-themed activities taking place on Saturday 18 April in the bookshop and on Sunday 19 April in the museum.
Explora’s activities focus on the theme Chaos and Harmony, chosen for the 21st edition of the festival, which is being held at the Ennio Morricone Auditorium Parco della Musica and is also taking place across various venues and cultural centres throughout Rome.
The theme explores how the universe and life are the result of transformations, disorder, symmetries and opportunities: a continuous dance between chaos and harmony that never ceases to surprise us, and which is reflected not only in the scientific disciplines that study these phenomena, but also in the many other forms of human knowledge and expression.
To mark the occasion, the Explora museum is offering its young scientists a range of activities during their visit and events in the bookshop, transforming the workshop into a space for discovery, sharing and fun. Admission on Sunday 19 April will also be at a reduced rate of €9.
The programme
Book reading at the bookshop on Saturday 18 April at 4.00 pm – free admission
Ages 3 to 6
Mixed-up colours, upside-down fairy tales. Full-colour edition, by Stepánka Sekaninova (Author), Alexandra Hockickova (Illustrator). Chaos and magic intertwine when a misguided spell transforms the colours of classic fairy tales. Help the witch restore harmony and originality to the characters, breathing new life into their stories with creativity and fun.
Free entry to the bookshop, subject to availability. Bookings via the Eventbrite platform.
At the museum on Sunday 19 April at 10:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00 – reduced admission to €9
Activities on offer during the visit for children aged 3–10:
- Bringing harmony to forms. Between chaos and harmony, creativity transforms forms and materials into ever-changing scenes of light and shadow.
- An explosion of colour. Creative chaos and chromatic harmony: painting with colours that follow the magnet.
Choose the date of 19 April from the calendar. Please note: the tour lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes, and tickets are refundable no later than 30 minutes before the tour begins.
Photography and video recording will take place during the activities.
Festival delle Scienze di Roma – Caos e Armonia (Chaos and Harmony)
The universe and life are the result of transformations, disorder, symmetries and opportunities. A ceaseless dance between chaos and harmony that never ceases to amaze us, from the chaotic explosion of the Big Bang to the dynamic equilibria of ecosystems, from the apparent randomness of genetic mutations to the logarithmic spirals of shells. And this is reflected not only in the scientific disciplines that study these phenomena, but also in the many other forms of human knowledge and expression: the dissonances and improvisations of contemporary music; the harmonies arising from the non-linear narratives of cinema and literature, or from the breaking of established patterns in the visual arts; the emergence of new forms of social cohesion from the instability of pandemics or revolutions; the way in which the chaotic dynamics of complex economic systems generate (or destroy) more or less stable equilibria.
Chaos and harmony are all around us, sometimes visible, sometimes not. Exploring them together – as complementary forces in constant interaction, rather than as two irreconcilable opposites – means opening ourselves up to complexity, embracing it, and trying to understand it. And we need to do this to discuss artificial intelligence and the climate crisis, conflicts and the energy transition, social evolution and global health. In other words, our present and our future.
