A new experience for museum visitors
We are pleased to announce that on 18 December, at the museum bookshop and online, music composed specifically for Explora (synomusic) as part of the EUROMUSE project will be broadcast via an online concert.
Two synomusic compositions created for Explora by international composers Maia Steinberg (Netherlands) and John Kotsilakis (Greece), who spent seven days in our city and museum in April this year.
During their artistic residency, they explored local traditions, elements of our cultural identity and details of our museum exhibition. Based on this experience, they created unique musical works designed specifically for our space and our audience.
Synomusic is an innovative form of applied music composed specifically for museum environments.
Its aim is to create a new atmosphere and offer visitors a richer, more exciting and engaging exhibition experience.
Special event on 18th December
Like all museums participating in the EUROMUSE project, Explora will also host a special event: a live online concert performed by composers directly from their studios in their respective countries of origin.
The concert will be available to audiences around the world via a streaming link on the EUROMUSE YouTube channel, while our museum will host a public screening on a large screen in the museum bookshop, accompanied by a creative workshop dedicated to the art of lanterns. Discover the event in the bookshop or follow the concert on YouTube.
This is a unique opportunity for visitors to hear the original compositions of synomusic for the first time, before they become part of the museum’s permanent soundscape.

EUROMUSE
A pioneering European project introducing a new cultural model: synomusic, or music composed specifically for museum spaces.
Through innovative research and artistic production, EUROMUSE explores how original music can transform the visitor experience, deepen their engagement with cultural heritage, and support inclusive, data-driven museum practices.
The project brings together museums in Rome, Athens and Mação, along with academic partners and emerging European composers, who create musical works tailored to each museum’s permanent collection and audience profile.
Over two years, EUROMUSE conducts large-scale audience research, engages the community through Community Muse Boards, provides professional training for museum staff and disseminates the results internationally.
The initiative culminates in the EUROMUSE scientific conference “Museums, Music and Audiences: Towards an Inclusive and Data-Driven Cultural Practice” to be held on 25-26 April 2026 in Belgrade, bringing together world experts in music, museology, psychology and cultural studies.
